Waqra Pukara 2 Tage Trekk “abseits der ausgetretenen Pfade”

1. Tag: Cusco to Waiki and to Waqra Pucara

Leaving Cusco in the early morning, we drive towards Acobamba, passing by some of the beautiful lakes in the region of the Cuatro Lagos. Taking a narrow road turning to the left before reaching Acobamba, we arrive to the sleepy village of Waiki, starting point for the 5 to 6 hours trek to Waqra Pucara, the impressive Inca ?Horned Fortress?. You will find seldom other tourists in the area and along the trail.
Horses and mules carry our equipment and luggage, and we start walking up along the steep trail. The mighty Apurimac River and its deep vertical canyon below Waiki are an awesome view along the trail.
At the end of the steep part of the trail we get in the far the first glimpse of Waqra Pukara. From there the trail becomes rather flat, following weird rock formations along the way. Towering rocks build the background of the Waqra Pucara ruins.
The spectacular setting of Waqra Pucara is something unique, as the whole complex, even the central plaza is bordered by breathtaking abysses.

2. Tag: Waqra Pucara exploration, return to Cusco

Next day we start exploring the site. In the main upper section between the ?horns? of the Inca fortress there are several buildings and temples covering a narrow platform. Double framed doorways, and even a triple framed niche, suggest important, probably very sacred shrines.

The area was most probably populated by nomadic groups hundreds or even thousands of years before the site was built, as near the trail there are cave paintings with scenes of hunting and llama herders.

On the way back to Cusco there is an interesting optional stop in Acobamba, where on the walls of a colonial chapel, used later as a mill, there are paintings representing the 14 ruling Incas according to the oral traditions, from Manco Capac to Atahuallpa, together with catholic sacred images.

An alternative, optional Inca Trail for the way back would take us straight from Waqra Pukara to the lakes area of Cuatro Lagos, and from there to Cusco, with quite a spectacular view of the lakes and the surrounding mountains.
